Joyce’s story serves as a beacon of hope for those who have lost hope in their medical condition.
Diagnosed with fibroids three years ago, life had become a constant battle for Joyce, a 34-year-old single lady living in the suburbs of Abuja, Nigeria.
Battling pain and exhaustion from excessive menstrual bleeding, a common symptom of fibroids, had left Joyce anemic, with a PCV (packed cell volume) of only 19% at the time she presented at the hospital where our free medical mission held in Abuja, in March 2024. This critical measure of red blood cells had dipped to dangerously low levels, causing her immense fatigue and impacting her ability to function. Coupled with the massive edema (fluid buildup) in both legs, Joyce’s daily activities had become an arduous struggle.
Joyce had recently lost her both parents, and her family, still reeling from the loss, found themselves burdened by the financial cost of her medical care. Unable to afford even the basic cost of surgical materials, they arrived at the mission with tearful pleas for help. Their desperation resonated with our mission’s Chairman/ CEO , Dr. Paul Odumu, showcasing the stark reality faced by many individuals in similar situations and in the rural, underserved communities we serve.
Thankfully, Joyce’s story took a turn for the better. Our free medical mission, with its commitment to providing affordable medical care to those who would otherwise not have it, offered a glimmer of hope. She received three pints of blood transfusions, one even generously donated by one of our volunteers. The love of Christ that always compels us gave us the selflessness and compassion for Joyce, and coupled with the expertise of our medical team, God paved the way for Joyce’s 6-hour successful surgery that removed 47 fibroids from her!
Joyce is hale and hearty now and has since returned home, back to living a normal life. She has not stopped thanking and praying for God to bless our team and mission. In her words, “I am so thankful to God for using OCMM to deliver me from fibroids. May God bless them abundantly,” she always says with smiles brimming on her face, showing a sign of great relief.
We, in turn, thank God who has always made a way for us to be able to do what we do.
