Bridging the Gap: OCMM’s Mission to Ensure Clean Water Access for All
Clean water is not just a basic necessity; it is a fundamental human right that millions across the globe still lack access to. Statistics show that while Northern Africa boasts a commendable 92% safe water coverage, Sub-Saharan Africa lags behind at a mere 60%, leaving a significant 40% of its 1.21 billion inhabitants without access to clean drinking water. In Nigeria alone, over 60 million people are deprived of this essential resource.
The repercussions of this water crisis are not limited to inconveniences- walking long distances to access water whether clean or not ; they extend to dire health consequences and economic hardships. Without clean water, communities are vulnerable to waterborne diseases, infant mortality rates rise, and individuals, particularly women and children, spend countless hours fetching water instead of pursuing education or economic opportunities.
Looking ahead, the looming threat of water scarcity exacerbates these challenges. Predictions suggest that between 24 million and a staggering 700 million people could be displaced by 2030 due to water scarcity, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
OCMM recognizes the gravity of this situation and is steadfast in its commitment to making clean water available to all. Our mission goes beyond mere provision; it encompasses health, empowerment, sustainability, and community resilience.
One of the key initiatives OCMM undertakes is well-digging and borehole projects in regions like Nigeria, where access to clean water remains a pressing issue. The process involves both manual drilling methods and heavy-duty drilling methods, each with its associated costs.
Manual drilling, although cost-effective, requires meticulous effort and can range from $300 to $700 (approximately #450,000 to 1,050,000). On the other hand, heavy-duty drilling, while more expensive at $600 to $1,200 (about 900,000 to #2,000,000), ensures greater efficiency and longevity of water sources.
Through strategic partnerships and community engagements, OCMM aims not only to dig wells and drill boreholes but also to educate and empower local communities to manage and sustain these water sources effectively. By promoting local ownership and involvement, we foster a sense of responsibility and resilience that extends far beyond the initial implementation phase.
We invite individuals, organizations, and governments to join hands with us in this noble cause. Together, we can bridge the gap and ensure that every person, regardless of their location or circumstances, has the fundamental right to clean and safe water.
On this world water day, we invite you to join us to give clean water to individuals and communities in dire need. A gift of $3 (N4500 Nigerian Naira) can provide clean table water for an individual for a week while a $12 (N18,000) gift can give clean table water to one person for a whole month! Clean water is not just a necessity; it is a catalyst for change, empowerment, and a brighter tomorrow for all. Be a part of this transformative journey. Donate today!
